The R. Marjorie Thorpe Scholarship

The R. Marjorie Thorpe Scholarship, named in honor of our deceased founder, is awarded each year to six students of Durham County High Schools. Since our founding in 1972, we have awarded more than 164 scholarships.

To qualify for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be a graduate of a Durham County Public School
  • Present a transcript that reflects a 3.0 GPA or better
  • Be involved in community/extracurricular activities
  • Show proof of acceptance in a college or university
  • Present two letters of recommendation from a high school principal, counselor, teacher, community leader, church leader, etc.
  • Complete all sections of the application;
  • Make sure the application is received on or before April 8 of his/her graduation year.


The Application Submission Process

Please read all of the information about our Application Submission Process carefully.  We are unable to accept applications that are not properly submitted.

The last page of the application form has a checklist of everything that is required in order for your application packet to be complete.

IMPORTANT:  When you submit your application packet, you must include all of the requested information at the same time with your application form.  Mail your completed application packet to:

Completing the Application Form

The application form is a PDF document that is a fillable form.  This means that you can download the form and then fill in the information using your computer (no need to print it to fill it in).

Application Deadline

The application deadline is April 8th of the student’s senior year.

Please be sure you have read through the requirements and the application form carefully. 

You must submit everything requested with your application form and your application packet must be submitted on or before April 8th in order to be considered.
